Snipe Nationals Crosby Day 1
It’s not just the competitors that are cooking in the boat yard but due to the extreme heat the Sea Breeze has been cooking too! Those who expected a light air venue were struggling in the conditions. The first race of the Crosby was in 12-15kts and those who thought the sea breeze had filled completely and gone right on the first leg were toasted as the breeze moved back to the left. By the second beat the sea breeze settle in and continued to build and moved right. The pack leaders Ernesto Rodriguez and Augie Diaz engaged in a tacking duel up the last leg that was a beauty to behold- with Ernesto taking the win. Later they both agreed that with the heat of the day it just about killed them both and maybe it wasn’t so smart to go after each other that hard on the first race of only a qualifying series.
The second race saw San Francisco like wind conditions but both the water and wind were about 60 degrees warmer. It actually makes for fabulous sailing as the crews are continually soaked which makes the heat tolerable. George Szabo and Carol Cronin headed right and lead at the first windward mark with Diaz/Tocke, Griffith/Clafin, and Rodriquez/Place nipping at their transom. The win went to Diaz and Tocke. The forecast for Day 2 looks to be about the same, rumor in the boat yard is that breakfast will be eggs scrambled on Nick Voss’s black anodized center board. Stay tuned
